Seoul, the center of politics, economy and culture since ancient times, is the capital city of the Republic of Korea with a population of 10.3 million and therefore is one of the five biggest cities in the world.

Seoul, the venue of the Opening Ceremony of the 2002 FIFA World Cup, is a city which boasts outstanding natural features. The River Han runs through the center of the city which sits in a valley surrounded by mountains. The result is a unique cityscape.

Today Seoul is a vibrant modern metropolis but its history stretches back six centuries, and among its towering buildings sit beautifully preserved ancient palaces. Seoul is also stepping up efforts to develop its tourist appeal, its green environment and its cultural attractions.

As the experienced and successful host of the 1988 Olympics, Seoul is again eager to host the World Cup in 2002.
