Chônju (Jeonju)

Once capital city of Post-Baekje Kingdom and home to the Lee Dynasty of the Chosun Kingdom, Jeonju, in southwestern Korea, has a rich cultural heritage dating back over a thousand years.

Historical sites include the Pungnam Gate and Gyeonggi Palace. The cultural experience includes such diversity as the Grand Festival of Traditional Music which is one of the country's most prestigious musical competitions, and the unforgettable taste of Jeonju's signature Korean dish, Bibimbap.

In a bid to emerge as a key local on the West Coast in the 21st century, Jeonju is making concerted efforts to present itself as a "Green City", a City for Culture and Arts, and a City of Knowledge-Based Industry. For centuries Jeonju has been a shining light in the Peninsula's cultural and artistic traditions. During the 2002 FIFA World Cup Korea/Japan, its aim is to be a sparkling destination for football fans from around the globe.
